Art Basel Paris, Cut Short
The fair’s fifth edition closed two days early as protests loomed. The previews, by most accounts, had already done the selling.

Art Basel Paris ended its 2026 edition at 7pm on Friday 23 October, cancelling its weekend public days because of protests planned in the French capital for Saturday. Several museums and other fairs in the city adjusted their schedules too.
Commercially, the timing mattered less than it might have. The fair’s VIP preview days on 21 and 22 October went ahead, and The Art Newspaper reported a run of seven- and eight-figure sales in the opening days despite the unrest.

The decision was not universally welcomed. A French gallery association representing more than a quarter of the exhibitors later wrote to the fair criticising how the closure had been handled — a reminder that a fair is also a working week for the dealers who rent the booths.

For collectors, the episode underlines how far the market now runs on access: the most important conversations happened before the public ever arrived.
